Private property is a trust signal.
Layer Zero sees private property as a primary layer of boundary and agency. To own something, land, a home, a business, a tool, is to have space in which your autonomy can be practiced.
It’s the physical counterpart to free speech:
- Without speech, your thoughts are trapped.
- Without property, your action is always provisional.
Layer Zero affirms that a system that does not protect private property cannot claim to protect agency.
Property rights require orientation and enforcement.
Layer Zero also understands that property rights are not just philosophical, they’re administrative.
- If you can’t enforce your property rights (e.g. through law, community norms, or physical defense), they’re not real.
- If the community doesn’t recognize those rights, you’re not protected, you’re permitted, and permission can be revoked.
Ownership is not enough, responsibility must follow
Layer Zero upholds the right to own and demands stewardship alongside it.
- A landlord who owns but neglects infrastructure is not upholding Layer Zero values.
- A business owner who exploits labor under the shield of ownership is not practicing community-scale coherence.
- When ownership becomes a license to extract, rather than a platform to steward, it starts to degrade coherence in the surrounding system.
- Ownership without responsibility turns property into dominion, not dignity.
Private property is sacred because it is the place where responsibility becomes visible. Not just freedom to exclude, but freedom to build, host, protect, and serve.
